The Finals, a first-person shooter developed and published by Embark Studios, a subsidiary of Nexon, is a free-to-play game. Emphasizing team-based matches set in maps featuring a destructible environment, the game encourages players to strategically leverage the dynamic surroundings to gain an edge.

The premise of The Finals centers on individuals participating in a televised virtual combat game show. This theme is evident in the holographic crowds visible during gameplay and the commentary delivered by the game's hosts, who provide observations on the status of teams and the game itself. Embark Studios, the developer, has noted that the game draws inspiration from works like The Hunger Games and Gladiator (2000).

In the core mode known as "Cashout," players assemble teams of three to engage in competition. The primary objective involves accomplishing tasks such as opening vaults and transporting them to a designated "cash-out" location. These objectives draw inspiration from capture the flag dynamics, necessitating team control of specific areas to execute desired actions. The decisive winner of each round is determined by the team that has accumulated the highest amount of money, represented in the form of coins generated when players are defeated. This valuation considers the cash-out value alongside various metrics like points, eliminations, assists, deaths, revives, and objective completions. At the conclusion of the match, these metrics are displayed to players and their teams. In-game currency is earned through player eliminations, objective completions, and other strategic combat maneuvers.

Players make character selections based on a "Light," "Medium," or "Heavy" scale, with corresponding changes to the character model. Each class has unique features, weapons, and abilities, and movement speed varies among them. Light builds, characterized by speed and smaller size, may wield submachine guns and possess invisibility. Medium builds can utilize a healing beam, assault rifles, and shotguns, while Heavy builds are built to withstand hits, equipped with abilities and an arsenal including light machine guns and C4 explosives.

Despite class-specific associations, players have flexibility in choosing weapons and equipment. For instance, a Heavy build might opt for a sledgehammer, and a Light build could choose a knife. Medium builds can decide between a healing beam or a defibrillator, the latter facilitating near-instant revival of a fallen teammate. This overview doesn't cover all options for each class and overlooks additional equipment affecting mobility, such as the Light build's grappling hook or the availability of zip lines, which can be deployed by a character with the corresponding trait but used by any player.

The game mechanics promote emergent gameplay through numerous free variables. These encompass highly modifiable terrain, involving both destruction and limited construction, as well as dynamic weather conditions and varying time of day across matches. The composition of teams adds another layer of variability. In the arenas, items suspended from ropes and objects on the ground, like barrels and plant pots, can be picked up and thrown by players, with some being explosive upon impact. Entire buildings may be destructible if the correct supports are targeted. While the game allows for limited construction, it mainly involves temporary structures such as barriers for player shelter. The "Goo gun" and "Goo grenade" also enable the creation of solid, though destructible, barriers resembling foam insulation.

When players are defeated, they transform into statues that teammates can carry and use for revival. The revival process is almost instant if the reviving teammate possesses a defibrillator; otherwise, it takes about five seconds. If a certain amount of time passes, players have the option to respawn themselves, though this consumes a "Respawn Coin," and players have a limited supply of these coins.
