Introducing the Apple Vision Pro. This marks the commencement of Apple's venture into spatial computing. Their inaugural headset, a blend of AR, VR, and wearable face computing, or however you prefer to label it.

All the contents within this box serve as a preview of what you can expect should you opt to invest $3,500 in acquiring one of these devices, or in this particular case, $3,900 for the 1TB Vision Pro variant. From the accessories to its inaugural boot-up, this marks the inception of our examination into the Apple Vision Pro.

Currently, we have three items available: the Vision Pro headset enclosed in this box, along with the Vision Pro Zeiss lenses. These lenses serve as optical inserts, meaning that if you require a prescription, they are included in the box and can be magnetically attached to the headsets. This feature allows individuals who wear glasses to still utilize the headset seamlessly. Additionally, there is an optional $200 fee for this feature.

The dimensions of this box are quite substantial, larger than a typical Mac box and possibly even larger than a Mac Studio box. It features pull tabs for easy opening, indicating that the packaging is likely to be well-designed. Given that this is Apple's first-generation product under significant scrutiny, I anticipate high-quality packaging to accompany the introduction of this inaugural device.

Then, resembling a shoebox in shape, we unveil the headset. It arrives adorned with a small cover and is equipped with one of these bands, specifically the Solo Knit Band, prominently featured in commercials. Crafted from a soft, stretchy fabric material, it's encased within a cardboard headpiece. Additionally, there's another band, the Dual Loop Band, which I believe accompanies this package. Setting this aside momentarily, let's delve into what else this shoebox-sized box contains. Removing the lid, which is of commendable quality, we're greeted with the interior, housing a Design by Apple in California pamphlet, likely to include stickers, and a microfiber cloth. Additionally, we find the Light Seal Cushion, comprising both a thin and thick Light Seal. More details await in the Vision Pro paperwork, with the Dual Loop Band also included at the top.

This is the alternate band, designed to wrap around the back and over the top of your head. We'll test its comfort compared to the Solo Knit Band. Moving on, we have the power component. The battery included with the Vision Pro is this unit here. Everything in the box follows a white or silver color scheme, lending to a cohesive aesthetic. Notably, the battery has a substantial weight to it.

It features a white braided cable, although it's uncertain if Apple has designated it as MagSafe. At the end of this cable, there's a proprietary connector that plugs into the side of the headset. This is the battery that accompanies the Vision Pro, providing a runtime of two and a half to three hours, with a capacity of 3,166 milliamp-hours as stated on the back. Despite this, the battery feels notably heavy compared to smartphones with larger capacities. To extend usage time or charge the battery, a USB-C cable and a 30-watt USB Type-C wall brick are included. While not exceptionally fast, the wall brick provides a power output of 30 watts.

Now, moving on to the accessories inside the box. Firstly, there's the paperwork, which includes a booklet detailing the contents of the box and instructions on how to pair the device with your iPhone, wear it for the first time, and attach the straps. It also provides guidance on how to properly store the cable around the battery, recommending a horizontal wrapping method with a bit of slack to avoid damage. Additionally, there's a polishing cloth included, distinct from the ones provided with their monitors. This thin, high-quality cloth is ideal for wiping down the glass front of the device, making it a valuable addition to the kit. Comparisons have been drawn between this microfiber cloth and the pricier options available for the Studio Display and Pro Display, making it a noteworthy inclusion.

The absence of Vision Pro-themed stickers may disappoint many individuals.

When purchasing an Apple Vision Pro, users undergo a facial scanning process using an iPhone equipped with Face ID sensors. This scan measures depth around the eyes and face, resulting in a custom-fitted Light Seal Cushion, available in either thin or thick variants. The Light Seal is tailored to approximate the shape of the user's face, utilizing preset sizes and shapes selected during the scanning process to optimize immersion.

Upon removing the plastic or cardboard packaging from the Vision Pro headset, users encounter a standard head-sized device with protective glass covering. The aluminum housing encases numerous sensors and glass components, giving the device a front-weighted feel. The custom Light Seal, designed to block out external light and match the user's facial contours, attaches similarly to AirPods Max headphone covers.

The headset comes with interchangeable Light Seal Cushions, with the thicker version being removable and leaving behind the main computer unit of the Vision Pro. Users have the option to choose between thin or thick Light Seal Cushions, depending on their preferences. Additionally, the package includes two band options: the Solo Knit Band and the Dual Loop Band, which can be selected based on the user's head size. The Dual Loop Band features two loops, one over the head and one behind, offering a secure fit for the headset.

The orange pull tab is designed to release the band from the Vision Pro headset. Pulling it unclicks the metal, allowing the band to be easily removed by pulling the other tab. Once detached, the headset reveals small pods over each ear containing speaker drivers directed downwards. Despite their small size, these components are densely packed and surprisingly heavy.

Attaching the alternate band follows a straightforward process, allowing for adjustments with Velcro to customize the fit. By making it taller in the top and back, the weight distribution is improved, resulting in a more comfortable and better-fitting headset. While the additional band across the top of the head may not appeal to everyone, it notably enhances comfort for extended wear.

Regarding the travel case, it serves more as a protective outer layer for the glass-covered exterior of the headset rather than a traditional travel case. This outer layer helps protect the device from fingerprints and scratches, making it convenient to transport in a backpack or similar carrying bag.

This is the external Vision Pro Travel Case, featuring a convenient handle on the top that extends out smoothly. Inside, there's an accessory pouch designated for items like the polishing cloth, power brick, and USB-C charging cable, all neatly stored to keep them secure. Additionally, there's an activated carbon deodorizer included for added convenience. The headset fits snugly inside the case along with the accessories, providing solid protection for travel purposes.

While some may have poked fun at the price of the $200 Vision Pro accessory case, it's an essential addition for those planning to travel with the headset. The primary use case anticipated for the Vision Pro is during air travel, making the travel case a valuable investment.

Lastly, let's discuss the Zeiss lenses. These lenses are ideal for individuals who wear glasses or require a prescription, offering compatibility with the Vision Pro headset. Priced at $100 for readers and $150 for prescription lenses, they are compact and feature magnetic attachment for easy use. Users can simply snap them into place, and if needed, they can scan a code with the headset to calibrate the lenses according to their prescription. This thoughtful feature ensures optimal vision adjustment for each user.
